Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of the sanad criticism and matan criticism methods in determining the authenticity of the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. This study is motivated by the fact that the narration of hadith involves humans as intermediaries so that there is the potential for errors in the transmission of the narrations. The research method used is qualitative research with a library research approach, which examines classical and contemporary literature in the field of Hadith science, especially works that discuss the methodology of sanad criticism, matan criticism, and Hadith takhrij. Data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical techniques by examining the concepts, principles, and steps of implementing Hadith criticism in the Islamic scientific tradition. The results of the study indicate that sanad criticism and matan criticism are two complementary methods and cannot be separated in the process of assessing hadith. Sanad criticism is applied through an assessment of the credibility and continuity of the narration, while matan criticism is used to test the validity of the substance of the hadith and its conformity with the Qur'an, other narrations, historical facts and rational principles, sharia principles, and common sense. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach in the study of hadith so that the assessment of the Prophet's history is not partial while, at the same time, strengthening the legitimacy of the classical methodology of hadith science in facing contemporary academic challenges and criticism.
