Policy on the Use of AI

1. General Statement & Islamic Ethical Framework

Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI) recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies can support authors, editors, and reviewers in the scholarly publishing process. However, the use of AI must not compromise academic integrity, authorship accountability, confidentiality, originality, transparency, or the quality of scholarly communication.

As a journal dedicated to Islamic economics and business studies, the application of AI must consistently adhere to publication ethics as well as foundational Islamic ethical values, including truthfulness (ash-shidq), trustworthiness (al-amanah), scholarly truth (al-haqq), and freedom from deception or manipulation (al-ghasysh).

Therefore, Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI) permits limited and responsible use of AI-assisted technologies under the conditions stipulated in this policy. AI functions strictly as a supporting tool and does not transfer responsibility for the content of a manuscript or editorial decisions to an AI system. Authors, editors, and reviewers remain fully responsible for their respective academic contributions and decisions.

2. Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted technologies as supporting tools in the preparation of manuscripts for non-substantive editorial purposes, including:

  • Language editing, grammar refinement, and stylistic improvements.

  • Translation assistance between languages.

  • Formatting assistance and structural adjustment according to the journal's author guidelines.

However, authors must not use AI as a substitute for their intellectual and scholarly responsibility. Authors remain fully responsible for:

  1. The accuracy, originality, and integrity of the overall manuscript;

  2. The validity of economic data, financial/business analysis, interpretation of Islamic commercial law (muamalah), and conclusions;

  3. The accuracy and authenticity of citations and references (marja');

  4. The originality of ideas, academic arguments, and jurisprudence-based economic reasoning (istinbat/ijtihad);

  5. Compliance with research ethics, publication ethics, and Shariah principles; and

  6. Verifying and validating all outputs generated or assisted by AI.

Authorship Requirement:

AI tools or systems must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they lack legal, moral, and ethical capacity to assume responsibility for the content, integrity, and accountability of a scholarly publication.

3. Disclosure of AI Use by Authors

Authors who use AI-assisted technologies in preparing their manuscripts must transparently disclose such use to Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI).

The disclosure must identify:

  • The specific AI tool or system used (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, DeepL, QuillBot, etc.);

  • The purpose of its use; and

  • The section or aspect of the manuscript in which the AI-assisted technology was applied.

The disclosure statement must be included in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript or provided during the submission process as required by the journal.

Example of Acceptable Disclosure:

“The authors used [Name of AI Tool] to assist with language editing and formatting. All AI-assisted outputs were thoroughly reviewed, critically analyzed, and verified by the authors, who retain full responsibility for the content, analysis, and conclusions of this manuscript.”

Prohibited AI Uses for Authors:

The use of AI to generate substantive academic content, fabricate or manipulate economic/business data, create fake or unverifiable references, automatically formulate Shariah rulings without scholarly verification, or conceal the origin of intellectual contributions is strictly prohibited.

4. Use of AI by Editors

Editors of Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI) may use AI-assisted technologies only for limited administrative or technical purposes that support journal management, provided that such use does not compromise confidentiality, fairness, editorial independence, or academic integrity.

Editors must not delegate editorial judgment to AI systems. Decisions concerning:

  • Acceptance or rejection of manuscripts;

  • Selection of peer reviewers;

  • Assessment of scholarly quality and relevance to Islamic Economics and Business;

  • Evaluation of peer reviewers' comments;

  • Resolution of ethical issues and publication misconduct; and

  • Final publication decisions

must remain under the full responsibility and human discretion of the authorized editor.

Editors must not upload confidential manuscripts, unpublished research data, personal information, or peer review reports into AI systems that do not guarantee adequate data protection and confidentiality.

5. Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers are strictly prohibited from using AI-assisted technologies to evaluate, summarize, analyze, or generate comments on manuscripts assigned for peer review, particularly by uploading or entering any part of the manuscript into an AI system.

This prohibition is intended to protect:

  1. Manuscript confidentiality;

  2. Authors' intellectual property;

  3. Unpublished research findings;

  4. Reviewer confidentiality;

  5. Editorial integrity; and

  6. The independence and accountability of the peer-review process.

Reviewers must prepare their evaluations independently and remain personally responsible for the substance, fairness, and confidentiality of their review reports.

6. AI and Research Integrity

AI-assisted technologies must not be employed to:

  • Fabricate or falsify Islamic economic and financial research data;

  • Manipulate statistical, econometric, or qualitative research results;

  • Generate false or unverifiable references, citations, or textual proofs (dalil);

  • Misrepresent sources or quotations;

  • Plagiarize or reproduce another person's intellectual work without proper attribution;

  • Conceal substantive AI-generated contributions;

  • Impersonate authors, reviewers, or editors; or

  • Otherwise circumvent established principles of research and publication ethics.

Any suspected misuse of AI will be investigated in accordance with the publication ethics and research integrity procedures of Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI).

7. Editorial Responsibility & Sanctions

The Editorial Board of Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI) reserves the right to request clarification from authors regarding the use of AI-assisted technologies when necessary.

Failure to disclose AI use, provision of misleading information regarding AI use, or use of AI in a manner that violates academic integrity constitutes a breach of publication ethics. The Editorial Board reserves the right to take appropriate editorial actions, including:

  • Requests for substantial revisions,

  • Rejection of the manuscript,

  • Retraction of published articles, or

  • Other corrective measures in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.

8. Final Statement

AI-assisted technologies are supporting tools and cannot bear authorship, legal, moral, or peer-review responsibility. Human authors, editors, and reviewers remain fully accountable for their respective scholarly and editorial activities.

This policy may be reviewed and updated periodically by the Editorial Board of Jurnal Studi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Islam (SEBI) in response to developments in AI technology, international scholarly publishing standards, and applicable regulations.
