SEJARAH AWAL PERPUSTAKAAN ISLAM
Akar Intelektual, Perkembangan Institusional, dan Perannya dalam Tradisi Keilmuan
Abstract
This article aims to broaden the horizon of thinking about the history of Islamic libraries. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literature study. The development of knowledge in the Islamic world is closely related to the influence of libraries, which have become increasingly complex and advanced. Libraries have emerged as icons of knowledge as an effort to build a more advanced Islamic civilization. The origins of libraries began with the tradition of writing practiced by the Prophet's companions in recording the Qur'anic revelations. The first library in the history of Islamic civilization appeared during the Umayyad Dynasty. The most famous library at that time was the one located in the Great Mosque of the Umayyad Dynasty. Libraries were divided into several models, such as palace libraries, mosque libraries, madrasa libraries, and finally, public libraries. Libraries essentially play a very important role in the intellectual development of Muslim society. Some of the roles of libraries in the Islamic intellectual tradition are as centers of learning, centers of research, centers of translation, and centers for manuscript copying.
