Policy on the Use of AI
1. General Statement
Jurnal Edukatif Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Keguruan Institut Agama Islam Sultan Muhammad Syafiuddin Sambas recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies can support authors, editors, reviewers, and other stakeholders in scholarly research and publishing. However, the use of AI must not compromise academic integrity, authorship accountability, confidentiality, originality, transparency, research ethics, or the quality of scholarly communication.
The journal permits the responsible and transparent use of AI-assisted technologies under the conditions stipulated in this policy. The use of AI does not transfer responsibility for manuscript content, research findings, peer-review reports, or editorial decisions to an AI system. Authors, editors, and reviewers remain fully responsible for their respective contributions and decisions.
This policy applies to manuscripts submitted to Jurnal Edukatif and to all relevant activities undertaken during the editorial, peer-review, and publication processes. It is intended to support responsible scholarly communication in education, Islamic education, teacher training, and related academic disciplines.
2. Use of AI by Authors
Authors may use AI-assisted technologies as supporting tools in preparing manuscripts, including for language improvement, grammar correction, translation, formatting assistance, and other appropriate editorial purposes.
AI tools may also assist with certain research-related activities when their use is methodologically appropriate, ethically acceptable, and transparently reported. Authors must not use AI as a substitute for their own intellectual contribution, scholarly judgment, or research responsibility.
Authors remain fully responsible for:
-
The accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.
-
The validity of research data, methods, analysis, interpretation, and conclusions.
-
The accuracy and verifiability of all citations and references.
-
The originality and proper attribution of ideas, arguments, quotations, and other intellectual contributions.
-
Compliance with applicable research ethics and publication ethics requirements.
-
Reviewing and verifying all AI-generated or AI-assisted content before submission.
-
Protecting confidential information, personal data, and research participants' rights when using AI tools.
AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for scholarly work or fulfil the obligations associated with authorship.
Authors must ensure that any AI-assisted material included in their manuscripts is accurate, appropriately attributed where necessary, and consistent with the journal's scholarly and ethical standards.
3. Disclosure of AI Use by Authors
Authors must disclose the use of AI-assisted technologies when such use contributes to manuscript preparation or research activities in a manner that is relevant to the integrity, interpretation, or reproducibility of the work.
The disclosure should identify:
-
The name of the AI tool or system used.
-
The purpose and scope of its use.
-
The relevant section or aspect of the manuscript in which the tool was used, where applicable.
-
The nature of the human verification or review undertaken, where relevant.
The disclosure should be included in an appropriate section of the manuscript or in the journal's submission system, as instructed by the editorial team.
The following is an example of an acceptable disclosure for language assistance:
AI Use Disclosure: The authors used [name of AI tool] to assist with language editing, grammar correction, and improvement of readability. All AI-assisted outputs were reviewed and verified by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.
When AI is used in research design, data processing, analysis, interpretation, or the generation of research materials, authors must describe its use in the relevant methodological or research section when necessary for transparency and reproducibility.
The use of AI to fabricate or falsify data, generate false or unverifiable references, misrepresent sources, conceal substantive intellectual contributions, or otherwise undermine research integrity is prohibited.
Routine spelling or grammar functions that do not involve substantive AI-generated content may be treated differently where appropriate, subject to the journal's specific disclosure requirements.
4. Use of AI by Editors
Editors may use AI-assisted technologies for limited administrative or technical purposes that support journal management, provided that such use does not compromise confidentiality, fairness, editorial independence, or academic integrity.
Editors must not delegate scholarly judgment or final editorial authority to AI systems. Decisions concerning the following matters remain the responsibility of the authorized editor:
-
Acceptance or rejection of manuscripts.
-
Selection and appointment of peer reviewers.
-
Assessment of scholarly quality, originality, and relevance.
-
Evaluation and interpretation of reviewers' comments.
-
Handling of allegations of research or publication misconduct.
-
Resolution of authorship disputes and other ethical concerns.
-
Final editorial decisions and publication-related actions.
Editors must not upload confidential manuscripts, unpublished research data, personal information, reviewer reports, or other protected materials into AI systems unless the use is explicitly authorized and adequate confidentiality, security, and data protection safeguards are in place.
Any AI-generated recommendations or outputs used for legitimate editorial purposes must be critically evaluated and verified by the editor before they influence editorial work.
Editors remain accountable for the fairness, accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity of all editorial decisions.
5. Use of AI by Reviewers
Reviewers must protect the confidentiality of manuscripts submitted for peer review and must not upload or enter confidential manuscripts, substantial portions of manuscripts, unpublished research data, or reviewer-related materials into external AI systems without explicit authorization and adequate confidentiality and data protection safeguards.
AI-generated evaluations must not replace the reviewer's independent scholarly assessment. Reviewers remain responsible for the accuracy, fairness, originality, and confidentiality of their review reports.
Reviewers must not use AI to generate unsupported criticisms, fabricate assessments, misrepresent the content of a manuscript, or produce recommendations that they have not independently verified.
Where the use of AI is permitted for a specific, limited review-related task, reviewers must comply with the journal's instructions, disclose relevant use when required, and ensure that the manuscript's confidentiality and intellectual property are protected.
Reviewers must not delegate their peer-review responsibilities to AI systems. Their evaluations must reflect their own expertise, critical judgment, and independent assessment of the manuscript.
6. AI and Research Integrity
The use of AI-assisted technologies must not be employed to:
-
Fabricate or falsify research data, findings, observations, or evidence.
-
Manipulate research results or misrepresent analytical procedures.
-
Generate false, invented, or unverifiable references and citations.
-
Misrepresent sources, quotations, or the findings of previous studies.
-
Plagiarize or reproduce another person's intellectual work without appropriate attribution.
-
Conceal substantive AI-generated contributions when disclosure is required.
-
Impersonate authors, reviewers, editors, research participants, or other individuals.
-
Generate misleading images, figures, tables, or other research materials and present them as authentic evidence.
-
Violate participant confidentiality, privacy, intellectual property, or applicable research ethics requirements.
-
Circumvent peer-review procedures or other established principles of publication ethics.
When AI tools are used to process or analyze research data, authors must ensure that the tools are appropriate for the research objectives and that their use does not compromise data quality, methodological validity, or the reproducibility of the findings.
For research involving teachers, students, educational institutions, or other human participants, authors must take particular care to protect personal information, confidentiality, informed consent, and other applicable ethical safeguards.
Suspected misuse of AI will be assessed in accordance with the journal's publication ethics and research integrity policies.
7. Editorial Assessment and Enforcement
The editorial board of Jurnal Edukatif reserves the right to request clarification, supporting documentation, or further information from authors regarding the use of AI-assisted technologies when necessary.
The journal may assess suspected AI-related violations through editorial examination, verification of sources, review of research documentation, consultation with independent experts, or other appropriate procedures.
AI-detection tools, if used, will be treated as supplementary indicators rather than conclusive proof of misconduct. Editorial decisions must consider the available evidence, the authors' explanations, and the specific circumstances of the case.
Failure to disclose AI use when disclosure is required, providing misleading information about AI use, or using AI in a manner that violates research or publication ethics may result in appropriate editorial action.
Depending on the seriousness and nature of the violation, possible actions include requesting clarification, requiring revision, rejecting a manuscript, issuing a correction, publishing an Expression of Concern, retracting a published article, or taking other measures in accordance with the journal's applicable policies.
Authors and other parties concerned will be given an appropriate opportunity to respond before a decision is reached, except where an immediate measure is necessary to protect confidentiality, safety, or the integrity of the scholarly record.
8. Final Responsibility and Policy Review
AI-assisted technologies are tools and cannot assume authorship, editorial, or peer-review responsibility. Human authors, editors, and reviewers remain accountable for their respective scholarly and editorial activities.
Authors retain full responsibility for the content, accuracy, originality, attribution, and integrity of their manuscripts, including any material generated or modified with AI assistance.
Editors remain responsible for editorial independence and publication decisions, while reviewers remain responsible for the quality, fairness, and confidentiality of their assessments.
Jurnal Edukatif may review and update this policy periodically in response to developments in AI technology, scholarly publishing standards, research ethics, and applicable regulations.
All parties involved in the journal's publication process are expected to comply with this policy and with the journal's broader commitments to academic integrity, transparency, accountability, and responsible scholarly communication.
